Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta Jones is building her parents a �750,000 luxury home in her native Swansea so that her entire family can live together when she visits Wales.

She has splashed out on a mansion in the Mumbles area because Dai and Pat Jones' home is too small, forcing the star and celebrity husband Michael Douglas into a hotel whenever she flew home.

Foundations have reportedly already been laid for a four-bedroom house on a 1.1 acre plot in the seaside resort, close to picturesque cliffs and beaches.

Residents have welcomed the news, having grown used to spotting the couple around town.

It follows press reports the couple are to send toddler Dylan to Llandovery College, a top private school in Carmarthenshire.

Due for completion by Christmas, the home is one of three at an exclusive site currently being developed by a local building firm.

One house at Plunch Lane has already been completed for a local lawyer at a reported cost of �1m.

Catherine, 32; Michael, 57; and toddler son Dylan, 2, check into the Swansea's marina-side Marriot Hotel on visits to the city because the actress' parents' modest home in the Mayals area is too small to accommodate the extended family.

Tourist village

The three divide their time between homes in Majorca, Colorado and a �2m Los Angeles mansion.

Now they will use Mumbles as their Welsh base after Catherine's parents move in.

The village - which has a pier, amusements and ice cream parlours - is a favourite with tourists and with revellers keen to take up the "Mumbles mile" challenge along its famous street of bars.

Architect Michael Batcup said: "They started making plans six months ago and work is on schedule."

Each bedroom will have an en-suite bathroom while one has a dressing room and a balcony.

Upstairs will also be home to a 24ft-long family room designed for Dylan to play in.

Downstairs will host a library and a huge basement is expected to become a gym complex for Catherine and Michael to work out in.

Mumbles boost

Overlooking Mumbles Cricket Club, the home could be the perfect introduction to British sport for Michael and little Dylan.

Roger Llewellyn, landlord of Mumbles' Antelope pub, said: "I am sure they would be welcome here - after all she is from this area.

"It would be a hell of a boost for the village and it would be nice to see them back.

"When Catherine comes back to see her parents, they are always round here, eating in local restaurants - they are very popular."

She last starred alongside John Cusack in American Sweethearts and scored acclaim alongside her husband in Traffic two years ago.
