The RSPCA has been called in to help 150 sheep and rams, which became stranded by floodwater at Bangor-on-Dee on Tuesday.

The animals were stuck in water between three and six feet deep near the local racecourse.

Elin Davies from the RSPCA said they are happy to help.

"We're sending our rescue boats to try and get some animals back on dry ground.

"We've already rescued a handful but the fire brigade will come and help us as well."

North Wales Fire Service has sent an emergency tender and a fire engine to help the marooned sheep.

Parts of the racecourse are flooded

Ms Davies said it is a strange situation.

"We have helped in similar cases before, we were contacted by the farmer after the land flooded worse than normal."

A number of roads surrounding the village have also been closed but Bangor-on-Dee itself has remained largely unaffected.

Also on Tuesday, a motorist had to be rescued from his car by local fire fighters after his car was trapped due to floodwater.

Flood Warning

After he was freed from his vehicle, a tractor towed the vehicle to dry ground.

Areas of Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse have also become waterlogged.

Last week, the first meeting of 2002 was called off after parts of the course were flooded.

The Environment Agency has said the Lower Dee has remained on flood warning since the beginning of February.

The current situation was caused after heavy rain fell throughout the Upper Dee catchment area, leaving the flood plane unable to dry out.
