A review of mental health services in Scotland has been outlined by Health Minister Malcolm Chisholm.

It is aimed at assessing the existing provision of mental health services and how the current range of facilities can meet the objectives of the Mental Health (Scotland) Bill.

The review will be led by Dr Sandra Grant OBE, who until recently was the chief executive of the Scottish Health Advisory Service.

The project team will consult users of services, carers and other relevant interests including NHS bodies, local authorities and the voluntary sector.

Mr Chisholm said: "I have asked for this review in recognition that the bill will, if passed, have wide-ranging implications for the provision of service for people with mental disorders.

"This review will enable us to determine how the current range of facilities, supported by the additional resources we are making available, will be able to meet the bill's objectives."

The review will also take into account the wide range of available information on existing services and the likely changes in demand as a result of demographic trends, morbidity changes and patterns of care.

The project team will also assess resources including the impact on the workforce.

The aim is to complete the work by the end of August when a report will be presented to ministers.
