The Clydebank group was named Scotland's favourite band or singer of all time in a survey commissioned for The Big Issue magazine. The late Sir Jimmy Shand came a close second, followed by Celtic favourites Runrig. Almost 15% of people polled said Wet Wet Wet, which was fronted by singer Marti Pellow, was their favourite.
Meanwhile, more men chose groups such as Simple Minds, The Bay City Rollers and Deacon Blue. Both Wet Wet Wet and The Proclaimers were the bands supported by people of all ages, including the over 65s. By contrast Primal Scream did not receive any votes from anyone aged over 44. Three popular bands of their time - Orange Juice, Jesus and Mary Chain and Altered Images - failed to score a single vote. Leon McDermott, arts editor at The Big Issue in Scotland, said: "The results show that Scottish people have eclectic tastes. "They also show the breadth and depth of Scottish musical talent with well over 50 acts named as the best." | See also: 21 Mar 02 | Entertainment 29 Dec 00 | Scotland 10 Sep 02 | Scotland Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
