Railway repairs continue apace
Railway repairs
A stretch of track was washed away in the rain
Railway engineers will continue to work round-the-clock this weekend to try to re-open the main railway line between Edinburgh and London.

The East Coast Line has been shut between Dunbar and Berwick since last Tuesday when it suffered serious damage as a result of heavy rains.

A stretch of track near Cockburnspath and some lineside equipment was carried away by flooding and a landslip.

An operation to repair the line swung into action and has already seen more than 2,000 tonnes of stones and rock ferried in to fill the hole in the track.

Railway repair workers
The repair bill could top 750,000

The damaged section of track is on top of a 50m high embankment.

As well as the reconstruction, facilities such as signalling equipment are having to be repaired.

About 50 men have been employed on the project which could cost as much as 750,000.

Railtrack officials hope passenger and freight services will be running again from Monday.

About 60 trains a day normally use the route.

No trains are running between Berwick and Edinburgh and a replacement coach service is in operation.

GNER is advising passengers travelling to and from Scotland to allow at least 45 minutes extra journey time and to check arrangements before travelling.

Another rail operator using the line, Virgin, said passengers should use either the bus and GNER link, connecting with Virgin Trains at Newcastle or York, or travel via Carlisle.
