Two students from Glasgow were among 40 people injured in a suicide bomb attack in Israel which killed at least five, according to the Foreign Office.

The pair, who are cousins and both aged 18, were on a bus in Tel Aviv when a Palestinian militant boarded and detonated a bomb.

One of the men, Yonni Jesner, is fighting for his life in a Tel Aviv hospital, while the other, Gideon Black, escaped with relatively minor injuries.

A Foreign Office spokesman said both men were understood to be studying in Israel.

Mr Black said doctors were fearful for his cousin's life.

He told BBC Radio 4's PM programme: "I am fine. I have got a small hole in my oesophagus. My cousin has a wound to the head and the doctors say his chances are slim.

"We are praying for him and there are prayers going on all over Britain that he will be OK."

The explosion happened as the bus drove through a shopping and restaurant district at the height of the lunch hour.

Speaking from Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where his cousin is being treated, Mr Black said: "I was standing on the bus with my cousin, who is now in a serious condition.

"The bomber walked on to the bus and blew up innocent, civilian Jewish people and I can't understand why.

"The attacks are unjustified, baseless, without any reason. It's purely a continuation of the anti-Semitism going on all over the world, in my view."

Five people were killed in the attack

Glasgow Rabbi Avrohom Weiss described Yonni as an "endearing and good-natured" young man.

Special prayers were being said for the two students on Thursday night in their local communities in the south side of the Scottish city.

Rabbi Weiss said Yonni's mother, Masha Gladstone, and grandmother were on their way to Israel.

He said he had been in contact with the family and understood Yonni's condition to be extremely critical.

It was "a matter of life and death" whether the student would live, he said.

Rabbi Weiss said: "He was endeared to the community, everyone loved him. Everyone is shocked by what has happened."
