| Sunday, 8 September, 2002, 12:49 GMT 13:49 UK Two dead after spate of stabbings ![]() The stabbings occurred throughout the city A spate of weekend stabbings across Glasgow has left two men dead and five seriously injured. The latest incident took place in Thomson Street, Dennistoun, late on Saturday night. A 19-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in Glasgow Royal Infirmary after he was found injured in the east end of the city. Strathclyde Police said they were treating the incident as attempted murder.
It was not known whether the attack was linked to a fight outside a nearby nightclub an hour before the man was found. Police said none of the incidents in the city over the weekend were connected. On Friday evening officers were called to Arden Craig Quadrant in Castlemilk, on the city's south side. Daniel Greechan, 37, was taken to Victoria Infirmary but died a short time later. A man has since been arrested in connection with his death. About an hour later two men were taken to the Royal Infirmary after being found seriously injured in Millerbank Street, Springburn. Attempted murder Anthony Davidson, 22, of Kilmun Street, Maryhill, died in hospital. Police said they were treating his death as murder. A 17-year-old male taken to Glasgow's Royal Infirmary after an incident near the city's Buchanan bus station at about 2055 BST on Friday. Police later said that two men, aged 18 and 19, had been arrested in connection with the alleged attack.
The man was approached by two men and two women who asked him for cigarettes. A scuffle broke out and the man was assaulted. A passing bus driver stopped and helped the man who was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where his condition was described as serious but stable. Detective Constable Drew Piper said: "This man was just heading home after a night out when he was assaulted for no apparent reason." Another 28-year-old man was stabbed in Waterloo Lane at 0300 BST on Saturday. Violent crime The stabbings come days after latest figures showed the number of people convicted of having a weapon with a blade or point in a public place leapt from 317 to 1,101. Violent crime in the Strathclyde Police force area jumped by almost 15% compared with a year ago. A total of 4,330 violent crimes were recorded during the three months to June, a 14.5% increase on the figure for the same period last year. The increase in weapons seizures included a 36% rise in the number of knives. |
