| Wednesday, 28 August, 2002, 05:36 GMT 06:36 UK Canal flood 'caused by sewer' ![]() Roads in the city had to be closed A flood of millions of gallons of water from a canal in Edinburgh was caused by a new sewer being laid, according to investigators. An inquiry was launched in June after water burst from the Union Canal in the Fountainbridge area of the capital. The alarm was raised just after 0430 BST on Sunday 23 June and at its height the flood water was 5ft deep. Police from Lothian and Borders Marine Unit had to rescue three people from their flats in Dundee Street, one of the worst affected areas.
Neighbouring industrial properties, including a brewery, were also affected and some streets had to be shut. The section of the Union Canal involved was drained as the inquiry began. With only final soil test results awaited it has been concluded that part of the canal bed collapsed because of the new sewer underneath. It is to be reconstructed and repairs carried out to the waterway. The work will probably start before the end of the year. | See also: 24 Jun 02 | Scotland 26 Apr 02 | Scotland 12 Feb 01 | Scotland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
