The Duke of Edinburgh has unveiled a plaque in memory of hundreds of people who died in floods 50 years ago.

The royal was in Mablethorpe in Lincolnshire on Monday to remember the floods which devastated the east coast of England on 31 January, 1953.

The storms killed 307 people and damaged 24,000 homes in Lincolnshire, Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk.

Prince Philip also formally opened an exhibition on the 1953 floods at the Dunes Family Entertainment Centre in the town.

The floods were caused by a combination of a strong storm surge and an unusually high tide.

Monday's visit was one of a number of events which have been held in the past few weeks to mark the 50th anniversary of the floods.
