| Tuesday, 11 February, 2003, 12:53 GMT Sex shop application rejected ![]() Plans for a sex shop in the centre of historic Newcastle have been refused. City councillors turned down an application to convert premises in High Bridge Street into a shop called Adult X. Among the protests were 116 individual objections and a petition with another 23 names. Many shop owners in the street, part of the old Grainger Town, were worried about the application. 'Violence link' City councillor, Sally Young, had called the proposal "unacceptable". She told BBC Radio Newcastle: "It would have made the sex industry, which is a rather joyless industry, more acceptable. "People may think it is OK to have this sort of thing, but I am convinced there is a link between pornography and violence against women. "Some towns and cities may have this sort of thing but it does not make in acceptable, and other towns do not have them. "There was a huge range of objections in Newcastle from various people." The application to open the sex shop was made by Provincial Enterprises. | See also: 27 Jan 03 | England 21 Jan 03 | N Ireland 20 Jan 03 | England 11 Nov 02 | England 30 Aug 02 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
