| Friday, 30 August, 2002, 11:21 GMT 12:21 UK Sex shop would 'lower the tone' ![]() Charles street is home to many specialist shops Plans to open a sex shop in a busy area of Wrexham have been criticised by local shopkeepers and residents. Campaigners against the proposals claim the store would "lower the tone" of the street which is home to a number of specialist boutiques.
The application for the shop in Charles Street has been made to Wrexham council and the consultation process has begun. Hundreds of people have signed a petition against the proposal which will be handed into the local authority. One of the main reasons the plans have come in for criticism is because there is already an adult shop in a nearby street. Organiser of the petition Neil Kenneally, owns Regent House of Flowers, he said people had been appalled by the plan. "Customers were abhorrent at the idea.
"Most people's reaction was 'We already have a sex shop in Wrexham, we don't want another'." Mr Kenneally added: "I think the shop would lower the tone of the street. "It'll be a dead shop with regard to the frontage. "There are a lot of ladies shops and hairdressers here and we attract a lot of ladies - this shop would be an affront," he said. Sonia Wright, owner of hair salon Tangles, said she is disgusted with the application. "Can you imagine what sort of people it would attract. "This street is like a little community and we all get on really well, we don't want this shop here." Mrs Wright added: "The other sex shop is on Yorke Street and that's different because it's not a typical shopping street like this." Wrexham County Borough Council have confirmed that they have received a licensing application to open a sex shop in the street. A consultation process had begun and people have been invited to write in with objections. | See also: 09 Jan 00 | Wales 31 Aug 99 | Wales 22 Jan 02 | Business 12 Dec 01 | Wales 12 Mar 02 | Africa Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
