An undertaker has won a fight to stop a sex shop opening next-door to his chapel of rest. Funeral director Wyn Jones was outraged at a plan to sell lingerie and pornographic videos just yards from his funeral parlour in Bridgend. Mr Jones was concerned that the shop's customers would rub shoulders with grieving relatives visiting his parlour. The sex shop plan has now been dropped after Mr Jones mounted a campaign with other shopkeepers to block the application. "Common sense prevails" Mr Jones, 51, feared the store would lower the tone of the street, where his funeral parlour has been based for more than 20 years. "I'm glad that common sense has prevailed and the shop will not be opening now," said Mr Jones. The application for a licence to open the sex shop was put in by businessman William McNerney. He was unavailable for comment. Application withdrawn The premises in question are less than 500 yards from a local school and next to other shops. Planners at Bridgend County Council confirmed Mr McNerney had withdran his bid to open the shop at an empty store in Market Street. A council spokesman said: "We were aware of the objections and the application has now been withdrawn." |
