Cameras installed at 18 crash hotspots
Speed camera sign
All the cameras should be up and running by April
Speed cameras are being installed at 18 accident blackspots in Sussex in an attempt to reduce the number of deaths on the road.

The bright yellow painted cameras will be placed at locations around the county where there is a history of serious crashes.

The scheme was set up by a multi-agency partnership which includes East and West Sussex county councils, Brighton and Hove City Council, Sussex Police and the Highways Agency.

The devices will be paid for through government grants made available from money paid to the treasury from speeding fines.

Camera sites
A27 Lewes, Selmeston and Hammerpot
A259 Telscombe Cliffs, Hastings and Brighton
C41 Uckfield
A22 Halland
A2021 Eastbourne
A24 Dial Post and Knepp Castle
A281 Lower Breeding
A29 Bognor Regis
A2031 Worthing
B2140 Rustington
A281 Horsham

Partnership spokeswoman, Emma Rogers, said: "The aim of the partnership, through the use of cameras, is to reduce the number of speed related crashes.

"If speeds are reduced by just 1mph we can expect a reduction in casualties by up to 5%.

"If people stop speeding in Sussex we have achieved our aim."

The housing for the cameras are already being installed at locations in Sussex and Miss Rogers said the devices should all be up and running by April.

Coldean Lane in Brighton is the first site to have the housing installed and the camera should be operating from next week.
