Commuters have been sharing their nightmare journeys with BBC London.

Our hill in Bushey had not been gritted, so this morning my girlfriend couldn't get her car up this slippery slope, and was forced to walk to the main road to get a bus to Watford.

After getting off the bus, she slipped on the icy pavement, fell, and broke her arm. She is now in considerable pain and will have to take days off work

It took our 12-year-old son eight hours to get home from school yesterday, a coach journey of around 20 miles (it normally takes an hour during rush hour) between Barkingside and Canons Park

Yesterday evening I went to attend my daughter's parents evening and I was stuck in traffic for over five hours in Finchley.

Then on the way home, another five hour wait. When I finally reached home, there had been a power cut and the house was freezing.

We left the Heart Hospital in Westmoreland Street, at 1800 GMT, hoping to get home by 2000 GMT.

That was wishful thinking. Bond Street was closed, Oxford Circus was packed and we couldn't get near the entrance at Tottenham Court Road.

We eventually walked round to Leicester Square and there was a huge delay to get on the Northern Line.

When we finally managed to get on the train we thought that it would be plain sailing. It wasn't.

All trains were stopping at Golders Green, it was packed last night, no more trains north bound, no buses and traffic jams and no grit. It took us till 0100 GMT to get home

I too had the nightmare Northern Line saga last night and walked from Archway to the Stag pub in East Finchley where G&T never tasted so good.

I know that London failed us last night, but Londoners did us proud.

There was a real sense of community, everyone was really sympathetic to everyone else and people walking up Highgate actually linked arms to help steady each other on the pavements

Yesterday while waiting in a blizzard for a bus at Vauxhall, an elderly lady was obviously suffering in the cold.

I went up to offer my coat but before I could get there two other people huddled round with umbrellas and warmth.

A nice sight in what is usually a most anonymous city. There are several examples of real kindness and thoughtful actions when these things happen
