The first of a new breed of intelligent pedestrian crossings is to be commissioned in West Yorkshire. The new Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent Crossing (Puffin) monitors pedestrians as they cross the road to ensure they have enough time to reach the other side safely. But it can also cancel the green man by using kerbside sensors that detect people walking away. Wakefield District Council is introducing a puffin crossing on Union Street in the city following concerns raised by both elderly pedestrians and motorists. Vehicle owners had complained that traffic was often disrupted by crossings being activated but not used. Pedestrians told the council they were not being given enough time to cross the road. | See also: 19 Jun 02 | UK 30 Jun 01 | Politics 06 Jun 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
