Toyota worker wins racism case
Vijay Madara
Vijay Madara failed the training course "unfairly"
Car firm Toyota has been found guilty of racial discrimination against one of its employees.

An industrial tribunal ruled that Vijay Madara was unfairly dismissed from a training course at the car plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire.

It said on Monday that the actions of training officer Duane Doherty were "disgraceful".

It had earlier heard that Mr Doherty - who was employed by Toyota - had marked down 29-year-old Mr Madara in a series of training course tests so that he failed it.

The tribunal concluded this was motivated by racism and held Toyota responsible as his employer.

Mr Madara told East Midlands Today: "Toyota did have an opportunity at a very early stage to deal with this matter, but they chose not to.

"They chose to deal with it in a very aggressive stance and at the end of it I have won.

"But I am very upset because I have had to waste three years of my life and a lot of anxiety has occurred during that process."

Mr Madara claimed he has lost up to 20,000 because of the discrimination.

The tribunal, which was sitting in Nottingham, will determine what compensation should be given to him at a later hearing.
