| Monday, 16 December, 2002, 11:12 GMT Car plant marks anniversary ![]() Workers had to train for months to build the first car A Derbyshire car factory is celebrating a decade of manufacturing. The Toyota plant in Burnaston is marking the occasion by donating two of its vehicles to local charities. The first car to roll off the production line was a Carina E which is still kept by the company. While manufacturing in Britain has been in general decline the Derbyshire plant has expanded. Great anticipation The plant now employs around 4,000 workers and to date has produced 1.3 million vehicles. Staff from across the site will be attending the celebrations. Tony Mathews has worked at Toyota since it opened in Derbyshire. He said: "Way back in 1992 I remember their was a lot of anticipation from the members who had built the car. Billion invested "We had spent five or six months actually training and sending trial vehicles down to show we could build them. "The anticipation was immense when the first car came off the line." Toyota is donating an Avensis and Corolla to Derbyshire charities. The factory received a major boost over the summer after the Corolla was named car of the year. Toyota has invested a total of �1billion in the factory which produces around 830 cars in any 24 hour period.
