| Friday, 17 January, 2003, 13:01 GMT 'Snobs' want to slough off postcode ![]() Windsor residents want to drop their Slough postcode Residents of an upmarket town want to change their postcode because it links them to their neighbouring town. Householders in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead want to lose their SL postcode because it links them with nearby Slough - made famous by comedy series The Office. A campaign has been launched to get Windsor and Maidenhead their own WM postcode, but Slough residents have called the backers snobs. The WM campaigners say higher crime rates in Slough have pushed up insurance premiums for homes in Windsor and Maidenhead carrying the SL postcode.
"Most people don't want to be associated with Slough if they can help it and that is probably true of people who live in Slough as well. Maidenhead's Conservative MP, Theresa May, is aware of the campaign and says she is looking into the points made regarding higher insurance premiums. She said: "I don't think the snobbery point is particularly valid." 'Change unlikely' Cllr Rob Anderson, leader of Slough Borough Council, said the campaign would not shock his "long suffering residents." "I think the snobbery point is closer to the mark. "But we are quite happy, we provide people with work and homes. "We are the fastest growing town in the country. "There are 120,000 people in Slough. They can't all be wrong." A spokesman for the Royal Mail said a postcode change was "possible but ultimately unlikely". | See also: 28 Aug 02 | Entertainment 15 Jan 03 | England 14 Nov 02 | Technology 04 Sep 02 | Business 17 Jun 02 | Scotland Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
