Residents in a South Yorkshire village have voted overwhelmingly in favour of having its name reinstated on addresses used by the Royal Mail.

The ballot was held because villagers in Staincross, near Barnsley, were annoyed that the name of the neighbouring village of Mapplewell was included on their postal address.

The seven-year campaign to re-introduce Staincross was supported by former Test cricket umpire and village resident Dickie Bird.

In the ballot 966 people voted in favour, and 199 against the change.

Mr Bird said it was important for residents to maintain the history of the village.

He said: "Staincross is steeped in history, it's in the Domesday Book."

The name of the village will be re-instated on mail for postal addresses going to Staincross in April.
