The world's last sea-going paddle steamer has returned to a Norfolk boatyard for a refit.

The Waverley - which is based on the Clyde but offers passenger trips around the British coasts - is being renovated by George Prior Engineering in Great Yarmouth.

It is the latest stage in a major restoration project began three years ago to return the boat to its original 1947 glory.

Mr Prior said he felt "very privileged" that the boat had returned to his yard.

The funnels were replaced in 2000

"It wouldn't be this year if we hadn't done a spectacular job last time.

"With the ship repair business being very difficult to get these days, lots of work going to Poland, China and those types of areas, we're very privileged that the vessel has come to our yard again."

The Waverley's rebuild in 1999-2000 cost about �4m and took seven months.

The work included a new livery and new funnels, as well as safety measures to bring the ship in line with modern maritime regulations.

It was largely funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, as well as by the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society.
