Residents of Bulcote say the fumes coming from Beecroft Farm is blighting their lives. The farm used to render chicken for pig feed but now uses them for fertilizer. The owners say they have complied with all conditions laid down by the local authority.
Residents claim they have been unable to enjoy their gardens this summer. David Morley, who lives near the farm, said: " I have lived in the countryside for many years. "I know all the smells in the countryside and this is so foul that it's totally out of context with anything you could put in the countryside." And it is not just residents who are finding it difficult to cope with the smell. The Tall Trees Nursery borders Beecroft Farm. Guy Stephenson, owner of the nursery, said: "The problem can actually be quite bad. If the wind is actually blowing towards us from the farm then the smell can be appalling, quite appalling. " The farm used to home 1500 pigs and owner Adam Tuxford rendered down chickens to feed them. Council action The pigs have gone, but the problem of the smell has not because the chickens are still being processed as fertilizer. A statement from an agent acting for Beecroft Farm said: "We've complied with everything every authority has requested. "The last 18 months have been difficult for the farm following the foot and mouth outbreak. "Every effort is being made now and every bit of advice is being sought and taken to alleviate any nuisance." Last week Newark and Sherwood District Council served a notice on the farm to stop it spreading the fertilizer. | See also: 21 Aug 02 | Americas 19 Jun 02 | Health 18 Feb 02 | England Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
