Police believe the incident in Rochdale happened when a gang of youths started throwing the fireworks. On Friday it was not clear whether the firework had been thrown directly at the dog, or it had picked one up in its mouth before it exploded. Police warned that unless steps were taken to protect pets there will be more incidents before this year's bonfire night celebrations. 'Nasty injury' Inspector Peter Jones, of Greater Manchester Police, told BBC GMR it was a "stark warning". "Even the smallest of fireworks can cause a nasty injury, and particularly they should be kept well away from animals," he said. "Most people keep their animals indoors in the lead up to bonfire night, but there are still dogs and cats out on the street. "This incident demonstrates how dangerous fireworks can be." | See also: 04 Jun 02 | England 05 Mar 02 | Scotland 03 Nov 01 | England 27 Jun 01 | UK 04 Nov 00 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
