Dog rescued from bonfire
Chopper the dog, rescued from unlit bonfire
Chopper was rescued from an unlit bonfire
A dog which was left barricaded in an unlit bonfire in Pembrokeshire has had a lucky escape.

The frightened animal was rescued by a group of school children from the village of Monkton .

The children tunnelled their way inside the bonfire, due to have been part of a fireworks display on a housing estate in Monkton, after hearing his barks.

The dog, named Chopper by the children, was taken to local junior school teacher, Helen Matthews who lives nearby.

My opinion is that he was deliberately put in the bonfire

Teacher Helen Matthews
She said today that the dog was in a terrible state, covered in fleas and very hungry, and could not believe that someone could do this to such a lovely animal.

"He was really, really thin and bedraggled and had a cut on his back," said Ms Matthews.

"My opinion is that he was deliberately put in the bonfire."

"But I can't see that it would have been anyone local who would have done it , because he would have found his way home."

"I think it must have been someone from outside," said Ms Matthews.

Chopper is now being cared for at Lawrenny Kennels, near Pembroke.
