Seafront cart-rides' dung threat
Great Yarmouth
The seafront at Great Yarmouth is due for a revamp
Horse-and-cart rides at a Norfolk seaside resort are under threat because of complaints the animals leave dung along the seafront.

The rides at Great Yarmouth may be a holiday tradition, but some councillors say the mess they leave could ruin plans to smarten up the seafront.

From this summer, the horses have had to wear dung-catchers to reduce the problem - but the leader of Great Yarmouth Borough Council says they were not effective.

Barry Colman told BBC Radio Norfolk: "The dung along the seafront as it has been this year is totally unacceptable."

Seafront revamp

He said councillors were now planning to liaise with the organisers of the trips to see what could be done.

But he warned: "We hope to be able to work in cooperation with the landau operators.

"If we get a lack of cooperation then I think we have to consider whether or not they are going to be a suitable form of entertainment and attraction on a modernised, revamped seafront."

Plans for a 25m regeneration of Great Yarmouth's Golden Mile were announced in March.
