| Friday, 23 November, 2001, 16:38 GMT Seaside tradition lives on ![]() Clacton is a traditional English seaside town The promenades and pier at Clacton-on-Sea are to be protected from redevelopment following fears that the seaside town was losing its traditional feel. The local council has made half a mile of seafront at the Essex holiday town a conservation area. It says it is to preserve the "unique character" of the Victorian and Edwardian seafront buildings. Protected within the area are the pier, a Martello Tower put up during the Napoleonic war, public gardens and hotels. Kiss-me-quick The stretch also takes in familiar seaside shops selling saucy postcards and kiss-me-quick hats, a candy floss stall kiosk and a whelk stall. Phil Hornby, of Tendring District Council, said: "It is very traditional and we wanted to keep that. "Gradually there was an erosion of the original character of the town.
"There was a feeling we should try to protect the remaining character for future generations." Most of the buildings date from the 1860s and 1870s when the town was developed. The pier was constructed in 1890 and is currently being refurbished. Within the conservation area are formal Victorian gardens which have recently been restored to their original splendour through lottery funding. The conservation status for the seafront means planning regulations will be more strict. A spokesman for the council said: "This will help to ensure any changes to the area preserve and improve its unique character. "The designation may also help create renewed interest in the seafront area, leading to the re-use and refurbishment of derelict and under-used buildings." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
