Search for Britain's brainiest batman
Bats are protected under UK law
Reading university is home to a bat colony
A quiz to discover Britain's most knowledgeable bat expert is being held as part of a conservation event at Reading University.

The 11th annual National Bat Conference, which is running from 6 to 8 September, will include speakers from bat groups, government agencies and academic institutions.

Among the topics to be discussed are social segregation, ageing, sexing and handling bats.

Which leaves the highlights - a grand ceilidh and a quiz to find "the bat brain of Britain."

Survival threat

The event is being organised by the Bat Conservation Trust, Britain's only organisation solely dedicated to the mammal's welfare.

One of the aims of the conference is to increase interest in bats among young people.

Despite being protected under UK law, many bat species face extinction because of changes to their habitats.

Delegates will look at the biology and ecology of endangered species as well as conservation measures.

The university is home to a colony of bats at Whiteknights Lake in the campus grounds.
