The North of England has been hit by flooding, as some areas recorded more rain on Thursday night than would normally be expected for the whole of August.

The floods occurred as the people of Glasgow began clearing up after heavy downpours on Wednesday and Thursday caused millions of pounds of damage in the city.

In Yorkshire, 50 people at a caravan park near Scarborough had to be rescued by coastguards and the firefighters on Friday morning.

And train services in the Leeds area were disrupted by flooding in tunnels.

On the North Yorkshire coast, lifeboats were used to rescue holidaymakers at the Scalby Close caravan park.

Emergency services began the evacuation at 0530 BST.

Three days of continual rain in the area had seen local streams rise dramatically, and part of the site was covered by four feet of water.

Humber Coastguard watch manager Steve Kinroy said: "Around a dozen coastguards are now on scene co-ordinating our part of the rescue.

"The holidaymakers, who range from children to the elderly, will be taken on board the inshore lifeboat then transferred to a smaller dinghy.

"They will then be taken to higher ground by the police who have arranged for them to be housed in Burniston Village Hall for the time being."

The Pickering area, between Scarborough and Thirsk, has also been badly hit by the torrential downpours, with Ryedale District Council issuing more than 1,000 sandbags in the town.

A spokeswoman for the council said: "We will continue to monitor the situation throughout the morning to see what happens.

"We are warning people that if they were flooded last time to take appropriate action as they are likely to be flooded again."

Commuters in Leeds have also suffered after floods in the Ardsley Tunnel area affected routes to Wakefield.

Houses are threatened by rising flood waters

Southbound trains from Leeds have been subject to delays and cancellations as a result.

Meanwhile, roads in Cleveland have been hit and police have issued a weather warning to motorists after closing some roads due to intense downpours.

In Grangetown some streets were under three feet of water on Friday morning.

In Glasgow's east end where 500 homes were hit, many residents are facing large debts because they did not have home contents insurance.

Council workers are clearing up the sludge left by the floods.

Officials from the social work and housing departments are visiting people to see whether they need re-housing.

Flood warnings

One North Yorkshire weather station recorded its highest one-day rainfall total since it began recording in 1971.

The station at RAF Leeming, in the Vale of York, recorded 86.4mm in the period from 1000 BST on Thursday to 0700 BST Friday.

That compares to a previous record of 48.1mm which was set in August 1971.

A spokesman for the Met Office confirmed that the new record amounts to nearly twice the average rainfall the area would expect for August as a whole.

On Friday morning, the Environment Agency had flood warnings still in place for five places along the River Aire.

The area covered by the warnings stretches from the Calder Valley near the Lancashire border, to the Vale of York in the north east of the county.
