Flash floods cause turmoil
Fire engine at scene of floods
Three roads were closed by floodwater
Flash floods closed roads and swamped some homes in Nottingham overnight.

More than 200 calls were answered by the fire service after sunshine turned to heavy rain during Monday evening.

Roads in the Old Basford area of the city were under four feet of water in places and part of Arnold Way was reported to have collapsed.

Fresh rain on Tuesday morning caused more problems in the Bulwell area.

Some chap came along to help and together we manhandled my wife into the street

Nottingham resident Rodney Case

Dozens of people joined the clearing up exercise after the thunderstorms caused flooding to homes and businesses.

One part of the River Leen burst its banks and drains could not cope with the volume of water.

Percy Street, Lincoln Street and David Lane in Old Basford were closed and a stretch of nearby railway track was also affected.

Rodney Case and his wife Sally found themselves trapped inside their flat on Lincoln Street.

The flash flood had jammed their doors shut and the water was still rising.

Sandbags distributed

Mr Case said: "My wife had already broken a window to try and get out.

"Some chap came along to help and together we manhandled my wife into the street."

On the Crabtree Farm Estate in Bulwell, sandbags were sent out.

The fire service says it also attended localised flooding in Stockhill, Bestwood, Hempshall Vale, and Snapewood.

It was also a busy night for firefighters across Leicestershire.

The force there received around 80 weather related calls on Monday evening.

Power was cut to thousands of homes by the first storms and remained off all night.
