| Monday, 22 July, 2002, 10:12 GMT 11:12 UK Segway scooter gets UK airing ![]() A two-wheeled scooter - partly developed by British engineers - goes on show in the UK for the first time on Monday. The inventors of the Segway Human Transporter hope it will revolutionise the way people travel. It uses a silicone gyroscope - developed at BAe Systems in Plymouth, Devon - to maintain balance, propelling users along at three times normal walking speed. The machine has already caused a stir in the US and goes on display at the Farnborough Air Show.
There are hopes new jobs could be created in the Plymouth area if the Segway proves a hit with the public. A BAe Systems spokesman said: "A lot depends on how demand takes off. "Currently they are made at a factory in Japan, which has the output to meet current demand. "But there is a chance that manufacturing could be expanded in the Plymouth area in the future if sales pick up." Much-hyped invention The Segway Human Transporter, invented by US engineer Dean Kamen, has attracted publicity since news of its development first leaked in January 2001. Mr Kamen claimed it would "sweep over the world and change lives" before revealing what it actually was. He expects it to be a huge hit in cities where traffic congestion clogs the roads. The machine has a top speed of 19 kilometres per hour (12 mph), and enough power in its battery for a 24-km (15-mile) trip. It is expected to cost over $3,000 (1,900) to buy when released in the shops. | See also: 21 Jul 02 | Business 19 Feb 02 | Business 03 Dec 01 | Science/Nature 04 Dec 01 | UK 12 Jan 01 | UK 17 Jan 01 | UK Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
