| Monday, 17 June, 2002, 15:55 GMT 16:55 UK Rugby League player in assault arrest An investigation is under way allegations of racial abuse during a Rugby League match and the arrest of a player after an alleged assault. Hull Kingston Rovers winger Alex Godfrey was taken to Workington police station on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after a Northern Ford Premiership clash at Whitehaven, Cumbria, on Sunday. An unnamed Whitehaven player required treatment after a fracas in the dressing room area. It is alleged Mr Godfrey suffered racial abuse from an opposition player during the game.
The 23-year old winger has been released on bail while police carry out further investigations. The Rugby Football League (RFL) is launching its own inquiry into events at the Recreation Ground. The executive chairman of the RFL, Richard Lewis, said: "We shall be calling for full reports from the match commissioner, match officials and the two clubs.
