| Monday, 4 March, 2002, 10:44 GMT RL player hurt in street brawl ![]() A rugby player has undergone emergency surgery after being badly injured in a street fight in East Yorkshire. Hull Kingston Rovers prop forward Jon Aston is said to be "comfortable" in Hull Royal Infirmary after the incident in Sutton village, north of Hull, shortly before midnight on Friday. Police said Mr Aston, 25, had regained consciousness and his family were at his bedside. Hull KR's match against Gateshead Thunder went ahead as scheduled on Sunday.
"No doubt Rovers would have much preferred not to play ... but the players did enough to ensure victory against a young and keen Gateshead squad." A police spokesman said officers were called to a report of a fight on Church Street and the junction of College Street. "From inquiries made so far it appears that there were about six people directly involved in the incident or who were in the immediate vicinity of it. "One male has been arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed to return to the police station at a later date," he added. The cause of the fight is not known and it is believed that Mr Aston was in the village as part of a charity presentation event. | Top England stories now: Links to more England stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
