Millwall rioter jailed
Police horse
Police horse Alamien was injured during the violence
A roofer has been jailed for two years for his part in the Millwall football riot.

Ian Harman, 37, of Bouverie Road, Folkestone, Kent, previously pleaded guilty to violent disorder after Millwall's game with Birmingham City on 2 May.

Harman was also banned from attending football games in the UK and abroad for 10 years after the hearing at Woolwich Crown Court.

The court was told Harman was one of the first people to start throwing missiles at police.

'Strong message'

His picture was taken from CCTV footage of the violence that broke out in roads surrounding Millwall's stadium, the New Den, in Bermondsey.

The image was circulated in the media and he was arrested, at his home, on 6 May.

Detective Chief Inspector Peter Newman, who is leading the investigation known as Operation Zampa, welcomed the sentence.

He said: "This is the first of many sentences to come.

"It sends out a strong message from the courts that society will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in any circumstances.

"More than 100 police officers were injured that night. Police horses too and there was considerable damage to the neighbourhood.

"We want to thank the public for their tremendous response to the publication of these images. Keep it coming."
