Below are key quotes, including an account of a dramatic warning from the Queen about his safety that eventually triggered the end of his trial on theft charges. How he said he was warned by the Queen: "No-one, Paul, has been as close to a member of my family as you have. There are powers at work in this country which we have no knowledge about." How he interpreted that warning: "She wanted to make sure my wife Maria and children remained safe. It was not a threat, it was sound advice."
How he told her he was keeping some of Diana's possessions: "I intend to protect the princess's world and keep safe her secrets and I intend to keep documents and artefacts which she had given to me." What he felt before his trial on theft charges: "I just felt as if I was being persecuted not prosecuted and everyone was standing by doing nothing". On the Queen: "She is a woman of truth and honesty." On the Queen recalling their conversation: "I thought I had been fed to the lions but, as it turned out, I had the most powerful witness to come without ever knowing it." What he said the Queen said about her relationship with Diana: "I tried to reach out to Diana so many times. I wrote many many letters to her, Paul." What he replied:"The trouble was, Your Majesty, that you spoke in black and white. The princess spoke in colour." And his verdict on the relationship between the two women: "People have always said there was a chronic rift between the two but that is so wrong." |
