Clickable map: Keeping England tidy

The state of England's streets has been the subject of a study by a government-funded environmental charity behind the Keep Britain Tidy campaign.

The Local Environmental Survey of England looked at 11,000 sites across 54 boroughs in nine English regions to rate tidiness.

London

Good:

The way London boroughs dealt with fly-tipping, cleaning up leaves, fly-posting, emptying litter bins and controlling the odour outside public toilets.

Poor:

Pavement grime outside public toilets and stations.

Pavement obstructions - from cafe tables to builders' rubble.

Satisfactory:

Curbing weed growth and graffiti.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else, from the way boroughs looked after lamp posts to the maintenance of landscaping.

Poor:

The public toilets "stink" in this region. There were also too many obstructions on pavements.

Good:

Cleaned up fly-posting, graffiti, leaves and fly-tipping.

Satisfactory:

Keeping the area around public toilets clean. Tackling weeds.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else, including the condition of litter bins and the maintenance of landscaping.

Poor:

Obstructions on pavements.

Good:

Cleaned up fly-tipping, leaves, fly-posting and graffiti. Keeping the areas around public toilets clean.

Satisfactory:

Cleaning road gullies.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else including for cleaning the areas outside train and bus stations.

Yorkshire and Humberside

Poor:

Keeping pavements clear of obstructions.

Good:

Cleaning up fly-tipping, fly-posting, leaves, graffiti, and emptying litter bins.

Satisfactory:

The way councils cleaned up weeds and kept the areas around public toilets and train, bus and rail stations.

Unsatisfactory:

Landscaping and generally cleaning the streets of litter as well as many other aspects of local environmental quality.

East Midlands

Poor:

Obstructions on pavements in this region were causing problems.

Good:

Cleaning toilets and removing fly posting, graffiti and leaves.

Satisfactory:

Cleaning the pavement outside public toilets and cleaning up weeds. The region also looked after lamp posts better than anyone else.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else from cleaning up litter to looking after bins.

Poor:

Obstructions on the streets, such as road signs.

Good:

Cleaning up fly-posting, leaves and graffiti.

Satisfactory:

Taking care of lamp posts, keeping the areas outside of bus, rail and train stations clean and ensuring the inside of public toilets were in good condition.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else from the quality of the grimy pavements outside toilets to the maintenance of landscaped areas.

Poor:

Obstructions on pavements and the smell around public toilets.

Good:

Top marks on cleaning up fly-tipping, leaves, fly posting and graffiti on the streets.

Satisfactory:

Cleaning up the channels next to roadsides and the graffiti around train and bus stations.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else from the condition of bins to the quality of public signs.

Poor:

The odour around public toilets. Pavements were obstructed, causing a nightmare for wheelchair users and people who have to clean streets.

Good:

Cleaning up fly-tipping, leaves, fly-posting and graffiti on the streets and outside rail and bus stations.

Satisfactory:

Tackling weeds and cleaning the channels next to roads.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else from cleaning of the streets to looking after landscaping.

None of the areas looked at were rated Poor.

Good:

Top marks on cleaning up fly-tipping, leaves, fly-posting, graffiti both on the streets and outside train and bus stations

Satisfactory:

Cleaning up weeds, channels next to roads, and the areas in and around public toilets.

Unsatisfactory:

Everything else including cleaning up litter, the condition of bins and the quality of pavements.
