Bollywood star Salman Khan faces another week in police custody after a court in Bombay rejected a second application for bail.

Mr Khan was arrested last week and charged with culpable homicide after his car ran over five homeless people late at night on 28 September, killing one of them.

It is alleged the actor was drunk at the time. He has denied allegations that he was driving the vehicle.

Indian police originally arrested him on charges of negligent driving and released him on bail. He was re-arrested after a public outcry.

The magistrate at Monday's hearing ordered the actor to be held for a further seven days because police investigations were still underway.

Correspondents say Mr Khan, who appeared unshaven in court, was visibly disappointed.

Fans in the packed courtroom gasped at the ruling and a few burst into tears.

Tougher charges

Mr Khan, famous for his tough guy roles, handed himself over to police less then 12 hours after the incident involving his Toyota Landcruiser.

He was charged with reckless driving and given bail of 950 rupees (less than $20).

But following widespread criticism of India's judicial system, the High Court in Bombay, also known as Mumbai, intervened.

The actor now faces the more serious charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The court also ordered him to pay compensation of a million rupees to the dependants of the deceased.

Test case

Police say the car involved in the incident does not belong to the film star, but have been unable to trace its owner so far.

They are also investigating reports that Mr Khan, 37, does not possess a valid driving licence.

Correspondents say the refusal to grant bail seems to be in line with the tough stand taken during the High Court hearings.

The lawyer representing the state government assured Monday's hearing that police have decided to make Mr Khan's a test case.
