| Friday, 4 October, 2002, 16:47 GMT 17:47 UK Film star must surrender passport ![]() Bombay police demand Salman Khan's passport The film star's vehicle was involved in a crash that killed a homeless person, injuring three others. The joint Police Commissioner of Bombay, Javed Ahmed, said Salman Khan has been instructed to remain in the country until police investigations are complete. Mr Ahmed was appointed by the Government of India when allegations of special treatment of Mr Khan by police evolved. Mr Khan handed himself over to the police, less than 12 hours after the accident. He was then released on bail of 950 Rupees (less than $20).
Allegations Bombay police says the Bollywood star has been asked to surrender his passport to guarantee he remains in the country without jumping bail. The police have also questioned his cousin, the singer-actor Kamal Khan, who was reportedly present at the time of the accident. As the investigations unravel, the police now claim that the Toyata Land Cruiser, involved in the accident, allegedly driven by Mr Khan, was not owned by the film star. In addition, the police are investigating the possibility that he was not in possession of a valid driving licence. Mr. Khan and his lawyer have maintained that the vehicle was not driven by the star at the time of the accident. Police protection In the last few months, the actor was provided with police protection after getting threats from the underworld. The police have now withdrawn the personal protection after last week's accident. A police body guard protecting the star was reportedly in the vehicle at the time of the crash. But Indian media reports said on Monday the bodyguard in question had contradicted the statement made by Mr Khan that the film star was not driving at the time of the accident. Earlier, police reports revealed that the blood tests carried out on Salman Khan verified he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. | See also: 28 Sep 02 | South Asia 30 Jul 02 | South Asia 12 Oct 98 | South Asia 21 Sep 02 | South Asia 02 Sep 02 | Entertainment Top South Asia stories now: Links to more South Asia stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
