| Thursday, 26 September, 2002, 14:21 GMT 15:21 UK Live With Chris Moyles: Your views ![]() Does he have a face for television? BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles makes his foray into television with a nightly live show on Five, produced by Chris Evans. The show is based in a London pub with an audience of just 16 people. "A train of bad games and tepid jokes that would be more at home at an irritating freshers' night than on primetime television," wrote BBC News Online's Finlo Rohrer. But what did you think? This debate is now closed. Please see a selection of your comments below. I remember Chris on local radio and he was funny there. He is sure to do well on television. So an untalented, misogynistic, talentless bully goes primetime, who says British TV is going down the drain? Och... it wasn't that bad folks! Give it a couple of days to bed down. I thought the idea of a small audience was quite refreshing. No he can't cut it on telly. The Millennium Tube should have given everyone ample proof of this fact, especially when he thought it highly entertaining to tell everyone the "twist" of The Sixth Sense. Nor can he cut it on radio. In fact, the only thing he can cut is a piece of paper with his razor-sharp wit... The first episode was awful, maybe it will improve, or maybe he should stick to the radio.
Chico Mendez, UK I think his ego is ten times bigger than his talent - he is smug rather than ironic and he comes across as a school bully. Still, maybe Chris Evans can do something with him. The fact that it's produced by Evans explains a lot about the format of the show - the audience participation, the bar set, the gag segments etc. It reeks of TFI. Having said that, I did enjoy the show. Moyles has Evans' ability to adapt the show to any situation while on air, and he's pretty funny too. Give it five weeks and it'll be a great ratings puller. There was nothing more irritating or tedious than listening to Chris on Radio 1. I'm sure he must be worse on telly. Why does he think people want to listen to his moronic banter? Chris Evans would be better off doing the show. It's like the return of TFI Friday - only the last episode before it got cancelled. A budget version of TFI Friday. No bands, no celebrities and no laughs. Is it any wonder Chris Moyles seemed so uncomfortable?
Anil Vij, Maidenhead, UK I thoroughly enjoy listening to Chris Moyles on Radio 1 - it always has me in stitches in the car on the way home from work. But I watched tonight's show on Five and all I can say is "Don't give up the day job!" Stick to the radio Chris! Hey, give the guy a break! It's only episode one, why so quick to judge? It was amusing but no more. But it could be great! The audience in the pub was 16 people, says the article. Probably slightly more than the audience watching on TV by the end of this undiluted rubbish. I could only bear to watch for 30 seconds. Cheap jokes and poor delivery. He is fooling himself thinking he is funny when in reality he is not.
David, UK The pub with all my mates round format has been done before by Chris Evans on TFI. Moyles was boring, went on about Leeds United and his weight too much and the audience laughed at anything. OK, he wasn't helped by pitiful production but when the show is empty, what's to produce? Give him a chance! All shows have teething problems and from what I could see it was mainly the production team's fault, not Chris's. It shows potential, I really liked the game at the end. People should give it a chance to develop before slating it, especially if they didn't bother watching! There's no-one as good as Moyles on the radio and I have faith in him to pull off this. There is only one thing wrong with Chris Moyles: he isn't a funny man. He should have stayed on the radio, he has the looks for radio and at least I knew how to avoid him there. Hasn't Chris Evans put on weight? And dyeing his hair too, that's a bit extreme. Pity he's not funny any more on his new show. Not sure why he calls himself Moyles though. What? Is it not him? Oh. Why is he doing the same show then? Chris Moyles is embarrassingly talentless. He should go far.
Carrie Fisher, Solihull, UK It's really a show that would fit a bi-weekly hour-long format rather than five squashed in 30 minute shorts. Talentless sub-par Chris Evans impression. This is Five going up-market? The show's content was spoiled by screeching student nurses from start to finish. This gave the show absolutely no chance right from the start. ged rid of the wenches. It's early days yet! While Chris looked very nervous (which is totally understandable on his first night), I am sure that as he becomes more comfortable the show will get better and better.
Onisillos Sekkides, UK Love his radio show, and the thing that makes that work, is his sidekick(s), Grey Head and Comedy Dave. Now stick even just Comedy Dave on that show, and it would be a ratings winner, they just bounce off each other. I watched it and thought it was pretty rough, but it will get better. As I say though, he needs his buddy to bounce off. The format of a drinking culture, everybody taking the mickey and lots of basically rubbish jokes. Oh, and the obligatory pictures of scantily clad women. I personally thought that it was terrible, which means that it will probably be a hit. A very poor version of TFI - stick to the radio Moylsie, you have more room to manouevre there. Shame the month of rehearsals ended up with last night's broadcast - rather shoddy. The show wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad either. It should treat Moyles less of a comedian (as it does when it focuses on the audience "laughing"), and more of a presenter. Trash. The type of TV that Channel 5 is famous for, when is their licence up for review?
Clare Smith, UK Boring. I actually felt uncomfortable for Moyles. Needless to say I switched off. Some people have a face for radio, he should stick to tried and tested means. It's so refreshing to see Chris Evans come up with an original format for one of his productions. Call me stupid, but I dont think weve seen this one before. There is nothing more irritating or boring than listening to Chris on Radio 1. Low and behold he is even worse on telly. Why does he think people want to listen to him? All i can say is, do us a favour Chris "Please give up the day job as well". The world will be a far better place without you!!
Sean, UK This is actually Chris's second TV show, he had a late night spot on a satellite station. And yes, that was awful too. I think everyone's getting fed up with his oh so comic put-downs. Chris Evans has produced more of the same of the old stuff. However, anything that has the influence of both the Chris's is sure to work. But is Five the best place for it we ask?! Comedy Dave would have been funnier. Perhaps in true channel 5 tradition, the "Not the Chris Moyles live show" will be funnier..... Remember Evans on his first TFI? He seemed very nervous and uncomfortable to me. Yet at its peak TFI was superb. You really can't and shouldn't judge a show by its debut. Moyles has the potential to be a big TV star - he annoys a lot of people and that's half his success. Good on him and I hope his show is a success.
Jammy, UK Having watched and listened to Chris Moyles for the first time, I was very impressed with his show. He was very funny. My only gripe was the show only lasts for 30 minutes!!! Keep up the good work Chris!! Have enjoyed Moyles in the past but I reckon he's more for the kids nowadays with the pop music he plays. Doesn't seem to be any variety anymore. Not quite as good as I had hoped, Chris did not have his usual sparring partners Comedy Dave and Will, he had no one to feed him lines or play off. I hope it gets better. The electric shock game at the end was surely the highlight of the show!
Ant, England The death throws of the pub bore plus the sycophants format... someone put it out of its misery... please! It's a nice idea but it doesn't really work in an half hour slot. Chris Moyles works well in the two and three quarter hour radio show but in 25 minutes everything seems too false and scripted. Perhaps an hour long show once a week like TFI Friday with bands in between the jokes would be better. The bits of the show I saw through the haze of Five's reception were cringeworthy. Laboured jokes and a bunch of jibbering idiots to laugh at everything he said. I love his radio show, and rarely miss a day but this was just Moyles trying to be Evans (and only succeding to be as annoying as he was). Bring on Comedy Dave to save the show!
In short, you can't judge a show on one episode, basically it was amusing (but not as much as you would expect from the usual Moyle's high standard), and given time and it will take shape in a few weeks. Compared to the radio show, visually it is harder to pull off, so at least he had the balls to try it. Chris Moyles is talented as he is handsome. TV does him justice by distracting from his irksome, monotonic vocal utterance. One can only hope he does not try the next show naked like Keith Chegwin. A good show. Not bad for Chris' first TV show appearance and I'm sure it will get better as we go through the week. Chris is a master at making great radio. I wouldn't touch Radio 1 till I heard Moylsie, and I'm its target audience! Now I'm hooked...I'm in hysterics every afternoon. However, his TV debut was disappointing...through no fault of his own. I think it was a mixture of nerves and the material he had to work with...not brilliant production and at times confusing. On radio 1 production is always first class. Stick at it Chris, it might come good for you!
Roland, UK It's a sad fact that the excellent-on-radio Moyles has never cut it on TV, as was proved with his Big Breakfast stints. He always seems self-conscious and nervous and loses his biting humour. I really hope the show improves, if anything it should be more like TFIF if it's going to work. Why did people get fed up of Chris Evans' TFI Friday? Was it the over enthusiastic hysterical laughter from the crew everytime Chris told a joke, was it the corporate in jokes including executive producers that the TV audience don't know or care about, was it the lame comedy sound effects included used the programme or maybe it was a combination of all these and other things. In which case why didn't the Chris's go through the programme and root out the rubbish before putting TFI Friday live with Chris Moyles back on air? I have great admiration for Chris Evans and am a listener to Chris Moyles on Radio 1. Unfortunately last night's show didn't seem to work. This definitely looks like a weak version of TFI. I do hope it gets better but am not confident as Moyles just can't seem to pull it off on screen. The high pitched heckling in the crowd was annoying, and the show was boring. Stick to radio Chris.
Nic, UK To coin a phrase - TFI Friday by any other name just couldn't smell sweeter. Only that always stank too! I'm a big fan of his radio show, and whilst I enjoyed the first episode, it felt a bit stilted: perhaps because they were trying to fit 45 minutes-worth of material into a 25-minute running time. I'm sure Chris will adapt quickly to TV, having a regular show, but he didn't seem as comfortable as he does on the radio. Nevertheless, I'll keep watching, and wish Chris and the team the best of luck: the show's format is a nice idea, and I hope it works. Come on, give him a chance. I thought it showed potential, I think it was first night nerves and a hectic pace that created the uneasy atmosphere around Chris. Once he settles down I think he will find a new audience with those not familiar with his radio show. I do have concerns however about how the radio show may suffer due to Chris being over-burdened. Especially given his extra-curricular drinking activities. Anyway, all the best Chris. I wouldn't watch any programme hosted by Chris Moyles if I had anything better to do, like drink bleach, or stick pins in my eyes...
I find him unbearingly boring, smug and self-centered. Why some people are commenting that he should stick to Radio, baffles me, please can he just be returned to wherever hence came from and never darken my eyes or ears again with his foul shade of Hades. I am a mssive fan of his radio show having me in hysterics every week but I have to say that last night Chris seemed somewhat scared of the camera. I will however be watching for the next two weeks to see if it improves, I say GIVE THE GUY A CHANCE!!!! I managed to last about 30 seconds and then I had to switch over. He looked nervous, (understandably) but you could see that it was going to be the same tired format. I love Chris on the radio, I think he's clever and funny, and that's what drew me to watching his TV show. I was very shocked and disappointed with what I saw. Stick to radio Chris!!!! The whole show was summed up by the Terry Venables halo image behind him - he doesn't know anything about football - like Chris Evans - and is trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Good shaky hands though. I could have done better. Perhaps tinges of first day nerves can be excused, but it blatantly lacked originality. Do hope it goes well for him and improves, but why copy TFI. Are there no new ideas out there?
Pete, UK It was terrible (sorry Chris). Liked the animation when the break started when all the characters turned their TVs off! TFI all over again. I'll be sticking with Liquid News on BBC Choice! I find it sad and unbelievable that in a country rich with comic talent, that the Beeb or even Channel 5 for that matter, keep investing time and money in this talentless slob. Might as well replace Moyles with Bernard Manning - at least he's the real thing, AND he's even funny sometimes. I would reiterate Susan Irvine's comments - Moyles is a talentless, egotistical bully - hope he fails. Truly bad. The audience appeared to be made up of members of a hen's party. His arrogance was only equalled by his complete lack of talent. Long live Liquid News. From the first moment Chris Moyles went on air his material was a rip-off of Chris Evans. It appears that nothing has changed!
Donato Spampanato, UK Monday: TERRIBLE Tuesday: TERRIBLE Wednesday:?????? Three strikes and you're out!!!!!!!!! I like Chris Moyles. His afternoon radio show is entertaining, but his TV show is just a load of tosh. What is the point of the show? There's no guests, no music... and looks like a poor man's TFI friday which lost its appeal years ago!
Paul Turner, Scotland Give him a break! It was the FIRST episode of the FIRST series and he has never done live TV before!! He was obviously nervous but in time he will settle down and be just like he is on his fab radio show! It makes a change from having the same old presenters (I mean you Ant and Dec) presenting with their predictable humour so give Chris a chance and the show will get better and better. Chris Evans has lost his tabloid TV midas touch. Chris Moyles, oh dear... Useless, cheap, talentless trash what a waste of time. His radio show sucks who would have thought it could work on TV. Channel 5 - whoops. Get rid of this loser and his sycophant cronies. Chris Moyles is one of the country's finest radio presenters - people seem to have a problem with him because he is "just like any other guy"! If his TV show is half as popular as his radio show then he'll be laughing! Chris is the Saviour of Radio 1, but he needs Comedy Dave, Grey Head and Thin Lizzy to be the Saviours of Live with Chris Moyles.
Lisa, Oxfordshire, UK In response to those who claim Chris has no talent for radio, I must disagree - love him or loathe him, the fact is he's very, very good at it...by far the best thing on Radio 1. As for the TV show, there's room for improvement, but give it some time.. The only show on Radio 1 I turn off is Chris Moyles, his bullying school boy humour punctuated by belching is the most irritating show on radio. I had the misfortune to catch his new tx show, (at a friend's house and so couldn't switch off). It left me wondering if he wears a mask and a gun when he collects his money from the bank. Surely he must as he is stealing a living. As Chris's (excellent) radio show gets six million listeners, wouldn't he be better concentrating fully on that, rather than diluting his material by dividing it between radio and this cheap, student-ish TV effort? At points Moyles was let down by poor production, but as he gets more confident and more relaxed with a live show, it'll get better. I think the name the photo game was poor though! Give Moyles a chance!! Chris is funny, give him a chance. However he raves on about dirty dirty Leeds, when he has only got into football in the last 2 years. Stop going on about Leeds. Up the OWLS!!
Victor, UK It's like the James Whale Radio Show that used to be on ITV at about 3am sometimes. Deeply sad. Not bad, give it time and I am sure it will get better - loved Moyles on the radio - so he should be able to make it on telly. Very much like the TFI format - you can see Chris Evans written all over it! Keep it going! Can the audience be anymore up Chris Moyles? Remember the possie with Steve Wright? Hope it gets better - some of it makes me cringe! As much as I enjoy him on the radio, the show is an up-to-date version of TFI Friday. Moyles, you definitely have a face for radio!!!! After reading all the comments on this page I thought I had to watch this programme to see for myself what it is like. It was awful. People are right - it is a cheaper version of TFI Friday, excpet Chris Moyles is absolutely shockingly abysmal. He thinks he's funny when he's not, and he comes across as being very unsure about things. Let's see how long this programme lasts, but I won't be watching it again that's for sure.
James, UK The first non-porno show on Five that I like! I have watched Live with Chris Moyles and its the best show I have ever seen! Chris is very funny and he is the best dj! This was as bad as TV gets - and I'm a fan of his radio show. Frequently my toes went into an involuntary curl and I even, God help me, found myself laughing falsely along with the audience at features that were patently unfunny. I must comment about the guy who called in and swore. TFI was infamous for its foul language and the trouble it got into with the authorities. I suspect Chris is trying to attract the same reputation. It sounded so fake that I susspect it may have been a fix to get in the papers. Nice try Chris but I don't think that it's going to work, mate. I don't even think Chris' 90's laddish style is going to last on Radio 1.
Alan, England I caught Chris Moyles saying how he'd watched Leeds the night before and Matteo was really good, trouble was he pronounced his name like he was Italian, and had no idea of his gaffe despite a deathly silence and dropped jaws. Bless. His mum must be so proud. I hope the prodcution team has left things flexible, as the format definitely needs some tinkering. I think despite the nerves the show will go from strength to strength. They should also think about getting some celebs on and a sidekick for Chris to play off. Then it would be pretty cool. Pure drivel and even the host could see it. Chris Moyles is ok, the show was ok. But had they hired some genuinely funny people like Mark & Lard and got a decent producer other than one-trick-pony Chris Evans and Five could have had a massive hit on their hands. A missed chance!
Spod, UK Chris's new show evidently needs polishing at the edges, but I enjoyed it and if the teething problems are overcome then it'll be a fab programme. If this isn't your thing then go back to watch the endless monotony of other channels broadcasting house-kitchen-garden something... Get Chris Evans presenting it instead of Moyles and it'll get better! Moyles clearly demonstrated nerves in show one, and who wouldn't as he and the show were bound to be compared to Evans' TFI. Show one had it's problems and Moyles at times looked uncomfortable, but show two was a considerable improvement...Moyles finding his feet, and showing far more camera confidence. I Like it, yes it resembles characteristics of TFI, but it's fun and quirky and "push the pint" is great, even if the contestants weren't. I am sure it will develop into a little winner for Five, and besides it beats the hell out of Jack Sugden with his hand up a sheep's backside!!!
Gillo, UK Chris IS very funny on his Radio 1 show but this TV gig doesn't come across too well.... Maybe Channel Five...scrub that and make sure that BBC Three should get Chris and his Radio 1 entourage to do a televised version of his radio show format... Along the lines of the Howard Stern show in the USA. I agree with a few of the comments that his radio show is good, in fact in the last year it has got very good... TV show... hmm, new to it, give it time, but I don't think it is right with him on his own. He doesn't do the radio show on his own... give it time but he needs guests of interest, and anyone who gets their hair cut off, that fool pushing the pints wants shot! What's his hair up to?? At least he's adapted to the new medium: he's a boorish git on the radio, and a boring git on TV. Bad. Even worse than his radio show. Broadcasting would be far batter off without him on either TV or radio. People are so quick to get on the "we hate Chris Moyles" bandwagon. I thought the first two shows were great and I fully enjoyed them. As for them being like TFI friday, so what?! TFI Friday was an excellent programme and if Chris is half as good as Mr Evans then the programme will be a success. Well done Channel Five for giving us entertaining television.
Anthony Spendlove, UK It's ok, but would be better if he had Dave and the gang on the show with him. He struggles on the radio to be funny without them...Dave is the really comic genius on the show! I've listened to Chris on Radio 1 for ages now, but it wasn't until I saw Live that I realised just how sexy he is! As for the show, I'm sure it'll setlle down, but it's a bit too much like TFI Friday for my liking. I missed Monday's programme and wished I'd not bothered trying to catch Tuesdays', it was rubbish. I did not think staring at the buttocks of the model on the front of the Daily Star yesterday was good entertainment. The format is sooo TFIF, that was axed, I can only see this show going the same way.
Hannah, Bristol Sorry, Chris, but let's face facts, it's a rather pointless show. Rather like an elongated intro/funny bit from an American talk-show, only wihtout the humour or the talk-show. It is such a shame, he can be tolerable on the radio, even funny on the rare occasions he doesn't labour the point or bully his team, but it seems that his ego has got in the way. He appears to be unable to accept any form of criticism (hence his bullying) so I wonder how he will respond to the comments made by myself and other viewers unfortunate enough to catch the show. | See also: 23 Sep 02 | Entertainment 29 Aug 02 | Entertainment 25 Aug 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
