Mike Myers, who reprises the roles of Austin Powers and his arch nemesis Dr Evil, was at the premire along with Destiny's Child star Beyonce Knowles, who makes her acting debut in the 70s' set comedy. Other cast members in attendance included Michael York, Seth Green, Robert Wagner, Verne Troyer, who returns as Mini-Me, and Sir Michael Caine, who plays Austin's father in the new film. Gwyneth Paltrow and Natalie Portman were among the other celebrity guests.
Austin Powers: Goldmember is the third film in the spy spoof series. While the first two films saw Austin Powers travelling backwards and forwards in time between the 60s and the present day, in this one he heads back to the 70s to save his father (Caine) from a kidnap plot. Myers plays several bad guys in the film, including Dr Evil and new villain Goldmember. Knowles appears as undercover spy Foxxy Cleopatra, and a host of stars make surprise cameo appearances. The film ran into trouble earlier this year when the producers of the James Bond films, MGM/UA, tried to impose a ban upon the title, saying that it infringed upon the copyright of the 1964 Bond film Goldfinger.
The two studios eventually settled the dispute, with New Line agreeing that any future titles parodying Bond films will be subject to MGM/UA's approval. Myers' comic creation first hit the big screen in 1997's Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery. The film, which starred Elizabeth Hurley, was a modest hit, but gained a cult following on video. The follow-up, 1999's Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, grossed $310m (216m) worldwide. Goldmember is released in the UK and the US on Friday. | See also: 23 Jul 02 | Entertainment 23 Jul 02 | Entertainment 12 Apr 02 | Entertainment 09 Apr 02 | Entertainment 01 Feb 02 | Entertainment 28 Jan 02 | Entertainment 05 Oct 01 | Entertainment 07 Jun 00 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
