Jolie - best known for playing Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider movie - told the magazine US Weekly they had been living in separate hotels for four months and had not seen each other since June. The couple, considered extremely close, hallmarked their affection with shows of mutual eccentricity, including wearing pendants filled with each other's blood.
Jolie, 27, said she was angry and sad at the breakdown of the marriage. "It's a very difficult and sad time," said the actress. Sometimes you don't see things coming, even though they are happening. "It was a real deep connection, a deep marriage, so it's not that simple to say this or that one thing caused the problems. "It's clear to me that our priorities shifted overnight." Intensity A spokesman for Thornton, 46 - star of Monster's Ball and The Man Who Wasn't There - said the actor had "no comment". Jolie went on suggest that their separate careers and her devotion to their adopted child could have played a part in driving her and her husband apart.
She concluded that she was unsure how things would turn out, saying: "We're not divorced yet. We're going through a difficult time. I'm not sure what will happen." Jolie and Thornton married in May 2000. The actress has been married before and Thornton has had four previous wives. The open intensity of their relationship made them instant media stars. They had tattoos done of each other's names, were rarely apart and spoke effusively of their close bond. Jolie won a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Girl, Interrupted. Thornton is also known as a writer, director, and musician. The two met on the set of the 1999 air traffic control comedy Pushing Tin. Earlier this year they adopted a Cambodian orphan boy, who they called Maddox. The child, now 11 months old, was allowed into the United States in early June. | See also: 04 Apr 02 | Entertainment 06 Jun 02 | Entertainment 19 May 02 | Entertainment 27 Aug 01 | Entertainment 30 Jul 01 | Entertainment 03 Jul 01 | Entertainment 13 Mar 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
