| Wednesday, 3 July, 2002, 12:44 GMT 13:44 UK Anthony Hopkins Omnibus: Your views Anthony Hopkins is now a US citizen Anthony Hopkins may be most associated with his role as the flesh-eating Hannibal Lecter but he has also been known to show his romantic side in films such as Shadowlands and Remains of the Day. BBC One have built a profile of the Welsh actor in an Omnibus special, which includes interviews with Jodie Foster, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman and Emma Thompson. "What could have been a simple promo for Hannibal becomes a vastly deep and engrossing profile of a man precisely because it stayed simple and straightforward," wrote the BBC's William Gallagher. But what do you think? Is this a revealing profile? Is Anthony Hopkins one of Britain's greatest actors? I think the fact that Hopkins' portrayal of Lecter was voted the number one screen villain in cinema history in a recent internet poll says it all. He has a classic screen presence and, in my eyes, a masterful ability to dictate the mood and pace of every scene he's in. Tony, you're the best! It was some years ago that Hopkins seemed to undergo a crisis in confidence, claiming that he would never act again and only two of the films he appeared in were any good. Well, Nixon remains my favourite film of all time, thanks mainly to Hopkins' stellar acting. He remains a true great among his profession. Omnibus dealt effectively with Hopkins' dark motivations. These are what make him such an outstanding actor. Like the best of performers he has harnessed the murky darkness in us all to produce memorable stage and screen images. As Emma Thompson said in the programme, it is all in the eyes. He seemed to be constantly deciding whether to kill or to crack up. In my opinion Hopkins epitomises the best of Welsh acting genius - taut but tamed. What is it about the valleys that produces them all? The rain, English mining oppression, the melancholic Irish in us? Long may Hopkins continue to fixate us with that glassy glare. Outstanding Omnibus production, by the way. From his humble beginings, Hopkins has undoubtedly become a true heavyweight in the world of film. Simply the greatest! Anthony Hopkins is the greatest actor spawned by the UK, and arguably the most versatile, extraordinary actor of the past 50 years. Tony is indeed a major figure of recent film history and the programme showed the reasons why. One thing missing however is comment on his sensual and sexual charm, without which he could never have done Remains of the Day and Howards End. Congratulations BBC, splendid tribute. Here is to Tony . Roll on Red Dragon. Keep up the great work. | See also: 03 Jul 02 | Entertainment 28 Feb 02 | Entertainment 19 Feb 01 | Entertainment 03 May 02 | Entertainment 22 May 02 | Wales 21 Apr 00 | Wales 01 May 00 | Wales 14 Apr 00 | Entertainment 28 Sep 01 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
