| Monday, 1 May, 2000, 15:49 GMT 16:49 UK Rhys baffled by Hopkins decision ![]() Matthew Rhys is earning rave reviews with Kathleen Turner in The Graduate New Welsh heart-throb Matthew Rhys says he is baffled at Sir Anthony Hopkins decision to become an American citizen. Rising star Rhys - winning rave reviews in the West End show The Graduate - admits he does not know why Sir Anthony changed nationality. The 25-year-old has just finished eight weeks filming with Sir Anthony in Italy for a new movie called Titus. He said: "I got on well with him - but why he has taken American citizenship I will never understand. "I could never do that - my roots are too deep." The Cardiff-born actor said he and Sir Anthony had many chats but the Oscar-winning star never mentioned his plan to switch citizenship.
Rhys was speaking before attending the Welsh Bafta awards in Cardiff where he presented a prize. Also presenting a prize was Hornblower actor Ioan Gruffudd - Rhys's flatmate. The pair have admitted their shame at the state of their shared flat. The two friends since schooldays have been flatmates for nine months but still sit on blow-up furniture. But Ioan and Rhys are pledging to go on a Changing Rooms-style shopping spree. Rhys and Gruffudd, also 25, have been too busy to kit out their north London flat. Gruffudd has just finished filming 102 Dalmatians for Disney and Rhys is busy with late shows with Kathleen Turner in the Graduate.
Rhys said: "We've been living on inflatable chairs ever since we moved in last summer - but this week is the big push. "We've decided now is the time for some serious sofa shopping, because Ioan has just finished filming 102 Dalmatians, and I've obviously got a bit of free time during the day." Rhys is starring in ITV's new hard-hitting drama Metropolis. In the five-part drama, Rhys plays a law graduate who becomes a dope-smoking drop-out - and is himself seen stripping off in a scene. As well as furniture shopping, Rhys and Gruffudd are planning a boozy night out with their other flatmate from hell - actor Rhys Ifans who played Spike in hit movie Notting Hill. All three Welshmen are big friends who have seen their careers rocket. Ifans lives just a stone's throw from the pair but has also been jetting around the world. Rhys said: "He (Ifans) is ridiculously busy at the moment and is working a lot in Los Angeles - but I'm sure we'll have chance for a few beers soon." |
