| Thursday, 7 November, 2002, 21:59 GMT Disney results hurt by tourism dip ![]() Blockbuster Monsters Inc has boosted DVD sales Walt Disney reported that its latest set of profits have been dented by a dip in tourism and poor viewing figures for its television network ABC. However, the entertainment behemoth still managed to meet analyst forecasts with a profit of $222m for its quarter ending in September.
Meanwhile, the company's revenues increased to $6.7bn from $5.8bn a year earlier. Chairman and chief executive Michael Eisner said it has been a difficult year for Disney after the 11 September attacks took their toll on tourism. Advertising sales at ABC have also suffered from a weak economy, as well as falling viewer numbers. Double-digit growth However, Mr Eisner had some good news for Disney's investors: "We anticipate in fiscal 2003 a return to solid [profits] growth in excess of 20%."
Recently, the company has ploughed more money into new shows, as part of an attempt to lure back viewers. He also predicted reduced costs would help Disney return to form. Share shock Disney's shares, which are down about 10% this year, ended Thursday 3.2% lower - prior to the company releasing its earnings statement. Mr Eisner has come under considerable pressure for Disney's falling share price and dwindling profits in recent months. Disney has also faced criticism from shareholders who want the company to split the roles of chairman and chief executive - and lay out a succession plan for Mr Eisner.
