Bollywood comes to the valleys

A cast and crew of 200 are spending three days on a south Wales hillside filming the opening action sequence of a new Bollywood blockbuster.

Producers hope audiences will be on the edge of their seats when the film hits the big screen in November, even though the rally car chase will last little more 45 seconds.

The film, Kyoni! Ho Gaya Na Pyar (Love Has Finally Happened), is on location at Walters Arena, a rally track near Onllwyn, about 15 miles north of Neath and Swansea.

Stuntmen, camera crews, scores of extras, support staff and two of the Indian film industry's biggest stars have been shooting from dawn to dusk to make sure everything needed is captured on camera.

When the director gives the cue helicopters fly overhead taking aerial footage, rally cars speed past and disappear in a cloud of dust and the many extras dressed as race enthusiasts shout and cheer.

It is a familiar routine as take after take is needed.

The film's UK coordinator Dipesh Majidhia explained: "The film starts with a car rally sequence so it is one of the most important sequences.

"It is three days work but it will not be more than 45 seconds in the film but that is not unusual."

On the weekend the production was at Dolbadarn Castle and the Llanberis mountain railway in north Wales filming a song and dance sequence before moving south.

The locations have been chosen following a Wales Screen Commission trip to India in November and Mr Majidhia said he was delighted with his experience of filming in Wales.

"We saw about six rally circuits before we came here.

"We were very pleased with the atmosphere here and it has everything we need.

"My director fell in love with this place when he saw it for the first time.

"There are some lovely places in Wales and that is why we are pleased to be here."

He is equally pleased to have secured the services of former Miss World turned actress Aishwarya Rai and co-star Vivek Oberoi who he describes as the Julia Roberts and Tom Cruise of Bollywood.

Mumbles restaurateur Mohamed Rafique is providing the catering for the cast and crew while in south Wales and members of his family are appearing as extras.

"It is very exciting to be here and it shows that local businesses are benefiting from them filming here.

"We are really looking forward to seeing the film."

Many of the extras have been brought in from cities with large Asian populations such as Leicester.

Ash Savani has travelled from Northampton so his three young sons can take part.

"There is a lot of standing about while they set up different shots but we expected that although we have not been on a film set before," he said.

"It is a very good experience for them."

Around 70% of the film is already in the can and makers Narsimha Enterprises are confident they can meet the November release date.

And because they are so pleased with the experience of filming in Wales the Wales Screen Commission is hopeful other productions will soon follow.

National co-ordinator Mike Wallwork said: "Wales has a wealth of stunning locations and we are clearly succeeding in impressing producers with what we have to offer.
