Craig Lucas apparently fell in the water |
The parents of a young legal executive who died at Swansea marina have collected 20,000 signatures for a petition calling for improved safety measures. Charlotte and Malcolm Lucas of Llanelli launched the campaign in May after their 21-year-old son Craig was found in the River Tawe a month earlier.
At least nine people have lost their lives in the city's waterfront area in just over a decade.
Mr and Mrs Lucas believe there are not enough railings around the river and the marina to prevent people falling in the water.
It's meant going over and over it again explaining to people that we were Craig's parents and what had happened |
The couple set themselves the target of 20,000 signatures and with more forms to be collected the final figure could be nearer 25,000.
Mr Lucas said: "We collected signatures in Swansea, Llanelli and Carmarthen.
"It's been the most difficult thing we've done in our lives - we could not go on anymore.
"It's meant going over and over it again explaining to people that we were Craig's parents and what had happened.
"I do not think we would be able to do it again but it was something we had to do for Craig's sake."
Risk audit
Assembly members from all political parties are backing the campaign.
Mr Lucas hopes they will agree to hand it in to Swansea council on his family's behalf.
He is also hoping relatives of other people who have drowned there will attend the official hand-over.
Craig Lucas was reported missing after he failed to return home to Llanelli following a night out in Swansea.
An appeal for information was launched, but his body was not found for almost two weeks.
His father added: "I would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign - all those who have signed it and the media for its coverage.
"Hopefully this will bring it to a head - surely they can't ignore this with many so many people supporting it?"
Swansea council is in the process of carrying out a risk audit of the marina area but said it would be inappropriate to comment until after an inquest is held.
No fixed date has been set but it is likely to be later this year.
