Georgia Hitchen has trained with a club in her school |
A seven-year-old girl is taking part in a charity race after several members of her family suffered from cancer. Georgia Hitchen, from Pentre Berw, Anglesey, will be running Cancer Research UK's Race for Life in June with her great-aunt, Denyse Mortimer. Mrs Mortimer's son was diagnosed with cancer and died when he was three. She was also diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago. Georgia said members of her "family are very proud of her". She has set a target of 100 for the 5km course and has been supported by her school, Ysgol Esceifiog in Gaerwen. "I've decided to run because lots of my family have had cancer," Georgia said. "I've been practicing in the 30, 40, 50 Club in school every Friday. My family are very proud and my friends are excited," she added. Mrs Mortimer, 60, ran the race in Rhyl last year and thought it a perfect event for Georgia to participate in. "It's a super course to run - I did it for the first time last year and when I was running it I realised there were a lot of children taking part. "It was flat, by the sea and it's something I knew Georgia would really, really enjoy," she said. After her son Simon was diagnosed with cancer, Mrs Mortimer said her husband ran a marathon to raise money for a cancer charity for children. After recovering form her breast cancer, she also decided to do something to help others in the similar situations. Georgia's mother, Charlotte Hitchen, 26, said seven members of their family have had cancer. Her uncle is currently undergoing treatment for bowel cancer. "I'm really pleased she decided to run the Race for Life, I think she's running for a really really good cause which is quite close to our hearts in this family as we have had quite a few sufferers - living and people who have died," Mrs Hitchen said. She was thrilled with the response and support from the local community. "Everybody tried to get involved in any way they can. We've had a lot of people phoning to sponsor Georgia and parents from the school have been making donations," Mrs Hitchen added.
