Canal town's new marina opens
Canal boats in Llangollen
The extra room for canal boats will boost the town's economy
Competitors at Llangollen's Musical Eisteddfod could follow in actor Harrison Ford's footsteps and arrive in town on a narrowboat next year.

A 32-berth marina costing 1.9m has been built to ease congestion on the busy Llangollen canal.

The marina and 48-hour visitor mooring is expected to bring in around 163,000 extra visitors a year to Denbighshire.

Last month, Ford took a break from Hollywood to enjoy a canal boat holiday in north Wales.

The Indiana Jones star and his partner, Ally McBeal actress Calista Flockhart, travelled to the region and attended the Llangollen International eisteddfod,

The eisteddfod is an annual festival of music and dance which attracts performers from more than 40 countries, and up to 50,000 visitors.

Bottleneck

Julie Sharman, from British Waterways said the Llangollen canal attracts thousands of boates every year.

"The beautiful Llangollen canal is one of the busiest waterways in the country," she said.

"For many years the town of Llangollen has been a bottleneck on the water, with only a few canal side moorings available.

"As a result, many boaters have simply not stopped and the town has lost out on valuable tourism revenue," she added.

Llangollen canal is nearly 200 years old and is part of the Shropshire Union canal, which runs from Nantwich to Llangollen and stretches 47 miles.

The aqueducts at Chirk and Pontcysyllte are steeped in history and were built by the engineers Thomas Telford and William Jessup.

They were among the first to use cast iron troughs to contain the canal.

British Waterways, who funded the scheme along with Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Development Agency, started work on the project last December.

The job has entailed widening the canal's existing channel to build the new mooring basin.

The area surrounding the basin will eventually be fully landscaped.
