A lottery grant of almost 4.5m will be used to turn a barge canal in Worcestershire into a tourist attraction. The Droitwich Barge Canal will be restored to its former glory using the grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Additional funding from local councils and 2.5m from Advantage West Midlands will also be invested in the area.
Work includes linking the canal with the Droitwich Junction Canal, the Worcester and Birmingham canal and the River Severn.
The 18th century canal has been in decline since the demise of the salt trade in the early 20th century.
A spokeswoman for British Waterways says they are likely to have to comply with certain stipulations in order to get the final amount, but is confident that this should not be a problem.
It means barge owners, holidaymakers and day trippers will be able to enjoy parts of the countryside in Worcestershire not seen from the waterways for many years.
