Canal man bows out
Retiring harbour master, Albert Rooke
Albert Rooke has been harbour master for 21 years
Birmingham's harbour master is sailing off into retirement after more than 20 years on the city's canals.

Albert Rooke has worked on the West Midlands' waterways all his adult life - before he took up the harbour master's job he used to move cargo in Oldbury.

Mr Rooke, who is from Erdington, said working on the canals has given him a great deal of pleasure.

"It gets in your system. It's one of those things you just keep on doing," he told BBC's Midlands Today.

Popular figure

As he took in his surroundings on his last day in the job, Mr Rooke reflected on the changing fortunes of Birmingham's canals.

"It's unbelievable really - so much change in such a short time.

"From dereliction to what it is now. You just can't believe it."

Nick Worthington, British Waterways' canal manager said Mr Rooke has always been a popular figure.

"Albert has always fulfilled a valuable role in major events as well as the day-to-day workings of the canals.

"I am always overwhelmed by the praise I receive for him from tourists, boaters and business people, in addition to the communities around the canals.

"He will be sorely missed."
