Vera Francis's departure signals the closure of the post office |
An 82-year-old subpostmistress is retiring after serving a village for 60 years. Vera Francis took over the branch at Brimfield, near Ludlow, in October 1943, having previously worked there for two years as an assistant.
She retires on Friday, and her departure signals the closure of the post office.
Local parish councillors are now stepping up their search for new premises in the village.
I can honestly say that no matter what happened, life and work have never been boring |
"Mrs Francis really is an amazing lady. To have given over 60 years' service to the same community is just remarkable," said Pauline James, Post Office rural transfer adviser.
Mrs Francis, who has been assisted in the branch by her niece Sheila Ingram, said: "Both the Post Office and the village have changed out of recognition over the past 60 years.
"I can honestly say that no matter what happened, life and work have never been boring."
She added: "I believe that the post office is a vital part of rural life and I sincerely hope that the efforts to continue the post office service in Brimfield are successful."
