A new theatre could be built in Wrexham |
A new 7m theatre will be built in Wrexham, after getting the green light from councillors on Wednesday night. The controversial project at the Wrexham Library and Arts Centre won the council's backing, despite a funding shortfall of more than 800,000.
Those opposing the project fear it will steal audiences from existing theatres in the area - the Stiwt Theatre in Rhos and the William Aston Hall.
But its supporters convinced the council the facility would work in partnership with the other theatres.
The proposals were passed by a majority of 25 votes to 15, with two abstentions.
The Wrexham Theatre Trustees now need to find 800,000 - they hope to receive this from the Welsh assembly.
John Armitage: A theatre is a good idea |
The theatre and conference centre, which should be completed in 2005, will have a seating capacity of 400.
However, many Wrexham residents said they were opposed to the scheme.
"I don't think I would go, I'm not a theatre person. It's a lot of money for a theatre and they should spend it on the hospital," said Joanne Pugh.
Her friend, 16-year-old Katie Edwards added: "I think it's a waste of money."
Local councillors opposed to the scheme claimed Wrexham already has theatres within the county.

Concerts are regularly performed at Grove Park Little Theatre in the town's centre, the William Aston Hall which is situated within Newi college and The Stiwt in Rhos - three miles outside the town.
Clwyd Theatr Cymru in Mold is also a short distance from the town by car.
However, John Armitage from Penyffordd near Wrexham said the town deserves a new theatre.
"The arts are quite important," he said.
"I don't think Wrexham has as much as bigger towns. I think it's definitely something that should be pushed.
"Why not spend it on the arts? It would be nice to see a performer from Wrexham."
Wrexham shopper Keith Millington added: "It's a good catchment area for a theatre.
"You've got Mold but not everyone would want to travel," he said.
